Lednice
The Lednice Castle stands on the right bank of the river Dyje, which flows through the southern Moravia, near the border with Austria. With its French garden and an extensive English park, the Castle complex belongs to the most important romantic monuments not only of the Czech Republic, but also of the whole Europe. Since 1249, for almost 700 years Lednice and its surroundings were possessed by the Lichtenstein family, who built up a unique complex, which the whole world "inherits" now (in 1996 the Lednice-Valtice area was declared a UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage, and totally there are 37 objects on the list of reservations in the Castle zone).
The Grotto. In the dungeon of the Lednice Castle an artificial stalactite cave of 90 m2 was created in the 17th century. An exhibition of monsters is situated in it.
The Castle orangery. In the mid-19th century there was built a greenhouse of nearly 100 meters in length and a width of 13 meters. There are mainly tropical and subtropical plants from South America growing there. Goldfish were released in the pond "for luck".
The Malawi Aquarium. Here, without a need for long trips and dives under water, visitors can see many species of fish from the southern seas. This exhibition was opened in 1993 after a serious reconstruction of the old stables.
Janohrad. Specially constructed ruins served as a hunting castle for the local aristocracy.
The Minaret almost 60 meters in height has always served as a lookout tower. It is decorated with quotations from the Koran, but it was never used for religious purposes.
Lednice – that’s a long trip, because the Lednice-Valtice area is very, very extensive. Walking around it by foot is a rather difficult task. You can move in the park in several ways – by horse-drawn carriages, by boats or bicycles.
