Olomouc
The city has long been among the most important Moravian towns. With its rich history, its ancient university, cultural and craft traditions, and, mainly, its situation in the center of Moravia, the city has always attracted travelers, trade and business people.
In the historical center of the city, surrounded by the sleeve of the Morava River, there are several spacious squares. On the main of them – the Upper Square – one finds a 15th-century town hall with astronomical clock, Baroque fountains depicting Hercules and the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar, who according to a legend, founded the city of Olomouc. A special attention deserves an UNESCO monument - the Pillar of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1716-1754 in honor of ridding the city from the epidemic of plague.
You cannot ignore the most important Olomouc Catholic church - Cathedral of St. Wenceslas. The height of the south tower of the cathedral is 100.65 m. This is the second highest church tower in the Czech Republic after the tower of the Cathedral of St.Vitus in Prague. The church houses the tomb of the Czech king Wenceslas III, who was killed in 1306 in Olomouc. His death meant the end of the Premyslovci family.
On the other side of the city's historic core there is a building of the University of Palacky which was founded in 1573. Today there are 25 000 students enrolled there, what makes a quarter of the population of the city.
The unique atmosphere of Olomouc makes it a popular venue for international conferences and festivals. The international festival of documentary films and videos Academia film Olomouc (AFO) has more than forty-years-long tradition. Another important event for the city is FLORA Olomouc – an International Horticultural Exhibition, each year attracting 80,000 visitors.
